Mt. Laurel, NJ – June 20, 2019—The Accreditation Board for Specialty Nursing Certification (ABSNC) in conjunction with the American Board of Nursing Specialties (ABNS) announces the establishment of the Sandra (Sandy) Lee Schafer ABNS Scholarship. Sandra passed away suddenly in December of 2018. She was a fervent supporter of specialty nursing certification and was a mentor to many in the field. Her fervor and dignity will be missed by many. To honor her memory, ABSNC and ABNS have collaborated to establish the Sandra Lee Schafer ABNS Scholarship.
The Sandra Lee Schafer ABNS Scholarship will be an annual award. The first scholarships will be granted in January 2020. Two recipients will each receive a $1,000 scholarship. These funds are intended to provide support for the ABNS registration fee and contribute toward the travel expenses related to participating in the March 2020 ABNS meeting.
The application will be available online from September 1, 2019 until November 30, 2019. Recipients will be chosen during December 2019 and announced in January 2020. The application can be viewed at http://sgiz.mobi/s3/Sandra-Lee-Schafer-ABNS-Scholarship-2019, applications will not be considered until September 1, 2019.
The ABSNC and the ABNS are currently in the process of developing a research grant to be awarded to an applicant whose research addresses the relationship of specialty nursing certification to positive patient outcomes. More information about the research grant application will be available later this year. ABSNC and ABNS plan to make the research grant application available online in November 2019.
“The scholarship and research grant in Sandy’s name recognizes her strong commitment to excellence in health care through specialty nursing,” said Felicia Lembesis, CAE, Executive Director of ABSNC. “Certification advances the field of specialty nursing and protects and improves the safety and health of individuals under the care of certified nurses.”
The mission of the Accreditation Board for Specialty Nursing Certification is to promote excellence in health care through the application of rigorous accreditation processes.
