Announcing the Sandra Lee Schafer ABNS Scholarship

ABSNC and ABNS proudly announce that they have established the Sandra Lee Schafer ABNS Scholarship. Sandra Lee (Sandy) Schafer participated enthusiastically in ABNS. She mentored many professionals and strongly advocated for nursing specialty certification. In December 2018, Sandy passed away. To honor her memory, ABSNC and ABNS have collaborated to establish the Sandra Lee Schafer ABNS Scholarship.

The first scholarships will be granted in January 2020. Two recipients will each receive a $1,000 scholarship. These funds are intended to pay the ABNS registration fee and contribute toward the travel expenses related to participating in the March 2020 ABNS meeting. The Sandra Lee Schafer ABNS Scholarship will become an annual award.

The application will be available online from September 1, 2019 until November 30, 2019. Recipients will be chosen during December 2019 and announced in January 2020. You may view the application at this time at http://sgiz.mobi/s3/Sandra-Lee-Schafer-ABNS-Scholarship-2019. Applications will not be accepted until September 1, 2019. To progress through the application pages, you must enter letters or numbers in the fields.

    The application requires:

    • Contact information and credentials (including certifications) of applicants.
    • Name of the applicant’s sponsoring organization and number of certificants certified by that organization.
    • Explanation of anticipated financial support from the applicant’s sponsoring organization to attend the ABNS Spring meeting.
    • 2 professional references including contact information, organization, and number of years which the reference has known the applicant.
    • A statement, maximum length of 500 words, of the value of ABNS to the applicant with reference to the vision, mission, and values of ABNS. The vision, mission, and values of ABNS are posted on the ABNS website.
    • An indication of the applicant’s willingness to participate in ABNS as an officer, board member, committee member or volunteer for ABNS projects.
    • The application must be submitted online at http://sgiz.mobi/s3/Sandra-Lee-Schafer-ABNS-Scholarship-2019.

ABSNC and ABNS are also developing a research grant to be awarded to an applicant whose research addresses the relationship of specialty nursing certification to positive patient outcomes. More information about the research grant application will be available later this year. ABSNC and ABNS plan to make the research grant application available online in November 2019.

ABNS President, C. Lynne Grief, announced, "I am pleased to welcome Janie, Rick to our Board, and Larry to our Nominating Committee. They each have a unique background, with diverse experiences that make them an asset to the ABNS Board of Directors, the Nominating Committee, and to the organization as a whole."

Rick, Larry and Janie, along with Terri Hinkley (MSNCB), volunteered to fill these positions via an 'open request' to the membership at the ABNS Assembly Meeting in March when the positions became available due to resignations. Rick and Larry will serve in their respective roles through June 2020. Janie will advance to ABNS President and Terri will begin her term as President Elect in July.

Janie Schumaker, MBA, BSN, RN, CEN, CPHQ, CENP, FABC, is the executive director of the Board of Certification for Emergency Nursing (BCEN). An accomplished nurse leader with more than 25 years of experience in health care, Janie has spent the majority of her career in emergency nursing, both at the bedside and in leadership roles. Prior to being named BCEN’s executive director in December 2017, she held multiple nurse executive positions including chief nursing officer (CNO), director of emergency services, and several senior business operations and client experience posts. A strong advocate for professional certification—in particular, board certification for nurses—Janie first earned the Certified Emergency Nurse (CEN) from BCEN in 1996 and also holds the Certified Professional in Health Quality (CPHQ) and Certified in Executive Nursing Practice (CENP) credentials.

Richard (Rick) F. Meadows MS, NP-C, FAANP, is the Chief Executive Officer of the American Academy of Nurse Practitioners National Certification Board. He participates on national task force committees and is an invited speaker and panellist at national meetings to represent certification. Mr. Meadows has been involved in the education of nurse practitioners (NPs) since 1978 in a multitude of programs, including military programs, certificate, and master’s degree in education. He maintained an active clinical practice for many years and has held a variety of leadership positions. He served on the American Academy of Nurse Practitioners (AANP) board, and chaired the American Academy of Nurse Practitioners Certification Commission. He has participated in forums involving both title protection and prescriptive authority and as a mentor to NPs for advancing legislative agendas. His service has been recognized with national awards, such as the 2016 AANP Sharp Cutting Edge Award and the 2014 ABNS Leaders’ Legacy awards.

Larry E. Simmons, PhD, RN, CNE, NEA-BC is the Director of Certification for the National League for Nursing, having served in that position since 2012. He has more than 20 years of nursing education experience, and recently retired from academia. He does still teach as adjunct faculty in the graduate programs of South University. He established a nursing education consulting business in 2008 and serves as president of the group. His certifications include Certified Nurse Educator® and Nurse Executive Advanced from the ANCC. He has also have received a certificate as a credentialing specialist from the Institute of Credentialing Excellence.

ABNS is a not-for-profit, membership organization governed by an elected group of member representatives. We are focused on improving patient outcomes and consumer protection by promoting specialty nursing certification. ABNS member organizations represent almost 750,000 certified registered nurses worldwide in a variety of settings. We have a strong, unified voice. Becoming an ABNS member organization is the best way to connect with other nursing credentialing organizations and dialogue about the specific issues certified nurses and those seeking certification face.

    ABNS Certification Survey

ABNS is requesting your assistance on 2 fronts:

    • First, upon reporting our survey findings at the March 2019 Conference, it was noted that several organizations had not yet completed the survey. The survey is still open and can be completed at https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/abns2018.

    • Second, it was also noted at the conference that several questions were ambiguous or unclear. To resolve these potential issues, ABNS is issuing a call for comments to address and correct these issues. Please review the question bank and send your comments/questions/concerns by to the ABNS Executive Office by email. The deadline for comments is July 1, 2019.

Update on ABNS Research and Grant Funding

In July 2018, ABNS indicated its willingness to support and partially fund a campaign with the Northwest Community Hospital to provide certification for their nurses. Unfortunately, due to leadership changes at the hospital, the project has been put on hold. ABNS is open to collaboration and future opportunities with Northwest Community Hospital or other individuals/organizations. We will keep the membership informed of such opportunities should they become available in the future.

BCEN’s TRAUMA NURSING CERTIFICATION EARNS ACCREDITATION

    FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

BCEN’s TRAUMA NURSING CERTIFICATION EARNS ACCREDITATION

TCRN Now Accredited by Accreditation Board for Specialty Nursing Certification (ABSNC)

OAK BROOK, IL (January 8, 2019) – The Board of Certification for Emergency Nursing (BCEN) today announced that its Trauma Certified Registered Nurse (TCRN) certification program has been accredited by the Accreditation Board for Specialty Nursing Certification (ABSNC). Launched in February 2016, the TCRN is a national board certification earned by registered nurses (RNs) who have demonstrated advanced knowledge, expertise and experience across the trauma care continuum including injury prevention, prehospital care, acute care, rehabilitation and reintegration into society. Already, over 3,700 TCRN-certified nurses are delivering exceptional trauma care in emergency rooms and trauma centers, prehospital and transport settings, and critical care, surgical and rehabilitation units.

“Trauma is a widespread, costly and harmful public health issue and TCRN-certified trauma nurses are playing a vital and increasingly impactful role in addressing it,” said BCEN Executive Director Janie Schumaker, MBA, BSN, RN, CEN, CPHQ, CENP, FABC. “ABSNC accreditation demonstrates that the TCRN program has achieved a level of excellence and attained the highest quality standards available in the industry, and that matters to nurses, healthcare teams and institutions, and patients and their families.”

Nurses specializing in trauma “are the largest component of the trauma team workforce, and are essential for accessible, effective, and efficient care for injured patients,” according to the Society of Trauma Nurses (STN) position statement on trauma nursing specialty certification. Further, STN believes that “nurses who specialize in the delivery of trauma care should seek trauma nursing certification.”

According to data compiled by the National Trauma Institute:

    • Trauma accounts for 41 million emergency department visits and 2 million hospital admissions each year.
    • The annual economic cost of trauma is $671 billion.
    • Trauma is the leading cause of death of children in the U.S.
    • Injury is the leading cause of death for people between the ages of 1 and 46.
    • Among people 65 years and older, falls are the leading cause of injury deaths and the most common cause of nonfatal injuries and hospital admissions for trauma.

Trauma nurses specialize in providing optimal patient care to individuals with a variety of minor to severe injuries including those experiencing life-threatening situations and those needing immediate life-saving interventions. Trauma patients include those suffering from head and body trauma and injuries from motor vehicle accidents, assaults, gunshot and stab wounds, burns, falls, environmental disasters, war casualties, and physical or emotional abuse or neglect.

“ABSNC accreditation provides an impartial third-party validation that BCEN has met recognized national industry standards for the development, implementation and maintenance of our certification programs,” said BCEN Certification Manager Amy Grand, MSN, RN. In addition to the TCRN, BCEN’s Certified Emergency Nurse (CEN), Certified Flight Registered Nurse (CFRN), and Certified Pediatric Emergency Nurse (CPEN) certification programs are also accredited by ABSNC.

“ABSNC accreditation is a comprehensive, rigorous and data-intensive process,” said Grand, “whereby a certification body demonstrates that a particular certification program adheres to ABSNC’s 18 accreditation standards including organizational autonomy, basis in a body of research-based knowledge, nondiscrimination, test development, validity, reliability, test administration, test security, fairness of passing score, recertification, confidentiality, and appeals.”

ABSNC’s announcement regarding accreditation of the TCRN is available at https://www.absnc.org/news.
